Freud's Nephew: Edward Bernays, the father of modern public relations

Freud's nephew was Edward Bernays, who is called the father of modern public relations. He explicitly argued for appealing to the instincts and emotions of consumers in order to manipulate their behavior. Perhaps his most consequential manipulation of the public involved his extensive campaign to encourage women to smoke. His most famous work was called Propaganda, published in 1928. This article here gives a bit more background to the links between his work and psychoanalysis. Bernays had come to America fairly early, so he was able to sponsor Freud's granddaughter, Sophie, when she needed a visa to the States in 1942. Here's an amusing article in the New Yorker about Sophie Freud's arrival in New York City.
